With the founding of Midlothian Country Club in 1898, with its long and storied history, the challenge has always been to maintain its relevance over the years, to ensure the quality and fineness of its operations, and to provide its members with the services that they all can appreciate.
To that end, in recent years, our clubhouse has been rebuilt, a new pool and cottage was constructed, a new sprinkling system was installed on the golf course, and our bunkers were completely redesigned.
In 2014, we commissioned Ray Hearn, a noted golf architect, to develop a master plan for the upcoming decades. In Ray’s own words, “creating a long-range master plan for a pre-1900 golf club with such a significant history and tradition was a tremendous honor and privilege.”
While the club is currently in the process of evaluating this master plan, the goal was to safeguard the overall integrity of the original Herbert J. Tweedie design while bringing the course into the twenty-first century.
Course features that impacted shot value, strategy, playability and aesthetics were all carefully studied, renovated and/or restored. The end goal of the golf course master planning is an increase in the enjoyment level for all members and their guests. Great care was taken so that a wide range of golfers, with varying skill levels, could be fairly challenged at this historic and highly respected former US Open venue.
