Riverside is a golf course for the whole family. It is located just four miles south of downtown San Antonio and features an 18-hole championship layout and a 9-hole par 3 course. The San Antonio River splits the front and back nine. This south-side course is an old fixture of San Antonio that provides a quality golf experience for every ability level.
One of San Antonio’s oldest golf courses, Riverside’s front nine opened in 1929 and the back nine was added in 1961. Because the two sides were built at different times, each offers a different experience. The front nine features tree-lined fairways, penalizing errant tee shots. The back nine “opens up” with less trees and more birdie opportunities.
The first hole is a challenging par 5 that entices many golfers to “go for it in two”, however the green is guarded by stately oak trees on each side of the green which make accuracy and length a must. One of Riverside’s signature holes is the par 5 #16 – a double dogleg with a large water hazard. Overall, the course is very forgiving for beginner golfers and makes for a fun day of golf.
If you want to work on your short game, the 9-hole Par 3 course is always available. It is a unique layout that winds through large trees, with holes ranging from 80 yards to 120 yards in length. The small, yet undulating greens provide a great setting to work on your wedge game.
