Voted the Best Golf Course in Montgomery County by the Montgomery Gazette readers and listed as one of the Top Ten Rated Courses in the Washington Area by Golf Advisor, Blue Mash Golf Course is conveniently located just 10 minutes from Olney, 15 minutes from Rockville and Gaithersburg, and 20 minutes from Germantown. And with easy access to Route 108, Route 200 Inter-County Connector, I-95 and I-270, Blue Mash is easily accessible from Washington D.C., Frederick, Baltimore and Northern Virginia.
Designed by world-renowned architect Arthur Hills, Blue Mash features a mix of links-style, parkland, wooded, and water holes. There are no forced carries, so it is manageable for beginners and high handicap golfers alike, though low handicap players will find the course’s length, strategic bunker placement, and devilishly well-protected greens offer plenty of challenge.
The practice facility at Blue Mash features a 10,000 square foot putting green, grass tee driving range and short game practice area, all supported by world-class instructors including PGA Certified Teaching Professional Kent Keith, LPGA Top 50 Teacher Joy Bonhurst, and World Long Drive Champion and custom clubmaker Mike O’Barsky.
Arthur Hills’ son, Joseph Hills, co-designed and owns the course in partnership with Tom Healy, a native of Chicago and former corporate banker. Surprised at the lack of courses in the greater Washington metro area, Hills and Healy spent a grueling 10 years building their dream course in Blue Mash.
Blue Mash Golf Course gets its name from the property’s original name “Blue Marsh,” referring to the blue clay of the marshy, thickly wooded land. Colloquially pronounced “Blue Mash,” the land was inhabited by freed slaves and made a stop on the Underground Railroad, harboring runaway slaves fleeing north to freedom; the stars and stripes of the Blue Mash logo pay homage to this unique history.
